India’s Top 10 Construction and Infrastructure Projects of 2018

Infrastructure and construction activity forms around 10 percent of India’s GDP. It provides direct or indirect employment to more than 30 million people in our country. The Planning Commission of India committed an investment of around $1 trillion for the five-year plan (2012-2017). The Indian Ministry of Roads and Transport had outlined a plan for investment of around $120bn in road-widening projects. Also, there is a plan to invest another $60bn in India’s ports by 2020.

Below we list out some of the major infrastructure projects which are on fast track and is scheduled to be completed by 2018 and 2019.

  1. Chenab River Railway Bridge ($92m) expected to complete by 2019 would be connecting the crucial Katra-Banihal section of the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Line (USBRL) project. Once completed it will be the highest railway bridge in the world, over river Chenab. It will be 359 meters above the river bed and 1.3 Km long in Katra, Jammu-Kashmir. The main arch was launched by the Indian railways on 7th of November 2017. With about 70 percent of the work completed, over 1,200 workers and 300 engineers are working round-the-clock to meet the project's completion deadline in 2019.

 

  1. Navi Mumbai International Airport ($2.4bn), a PPP project which was abysmally delayed by land acquisition and environmental issues has now been cleared of all issues and work has started from March 2015. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) expects Phase 1 that includes the terminal and runways to be ready by 2019 when the first flight is expected to take off.

 

  1. Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor ($90bn) aims to create seven smart cities. The smart cities will be evenly distributed along a dedicated freight corridor between the two large Indian cities Delhi and Mumbai. Once completed Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor is supposed to be developed as a Model Industrial Corridor of international standards. There will be an emphasis on expanding the manufacturing and services base and develop DMIC as the ‘Global Manufacturing and Trading Hub’. The project is expected to generate three million job opportunities in manufacturing, processing and services sectors.

 

  1. Charanka Solar Park ($280m) is a 2,000-hectare plot of land developed near Charanka village in Patan district of northern Gujarat. It hosts about 19 different projects by different developers. Once completed it will be the world's second-largest photovoltaic power station. The Charanka Solar Park will host 500 MW of solar power systems. The solar park is expected to save around 900,000 tonnes of natural gas annually.

 

  1. The Bogibeel Bridge is a Railway Project in Arunachal Pradesh; Indian Railways aims to build broad gauge railway tracks across the north-eastern states. Survey has started for three railway tracks linking Tawang. Bhalukpung to Tawang, Silaphatar to Bama and Murkongselek via Rupai to Pasighat are the railway tracks that are included.  Once completed the Bogibeel Bridge will connect Dibrugarh on the south bank of the river with Dhemaji on the north bank and it will be a double-decked bridge featuring two railway lines on the lower deck and a three-lane road on the upper deck, flanked by footpaths on either side. The upper deck will be 10.5m above the lower deck. 
    The bridge, which is the fourth over the Brahmaputra, will facilitate easy connectivity between eastern Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and benefit nearly five million people. 

 

  1. Banihal-Qazigund tunnel ($282m) The Banihal-Qazigund section includes the 11.2km Pir Panjal tunnel and offers reduced travel distances between the two towns, from the current 35km by road. The section connects the Jammu region to the 119km Kashmir Valley line between Qazigund, Srinagar and Baramulla.

 

  1. Setu Bharatam project, which is worth Rs 50,800-crore aims to ensure safety in highways without railway crossings by 2019. It has plans to overhaul of 1,500 British-era bridges. By 2019, at an estimated cost of Rs 20,800 crore the project will replace 208 railway crossings with rail over bridges (ROBs). The project aims to overhaul 1,500 bridges of the British era that will be restructured and reconstructed for around Rs 30,000 crore. 

 

  1. Inland waterways project has been planned in rivers like Ganga, Brahmaputra and Mahanadi. 106 inland waterways are to be developed for transport of cargo and passengers in the next 2-3 years. The government has allocated 4,000 crores for the development of waterway facilities in Ganga. Government is also mulling to invest Rs 50000 crore for development of Paradip port. For the development of a new port at Paradip, an additional amount of Rs 8200 crore would be used. The tendering for Barak, Ghaghra, Gandak and Kosi rivers has already been initiated for fairway development. 

 

  1. Chardham Mahamarg Vikas Pariyojna is an ambitious project to improve connectivity to the Char Dham pilgrimage centres in the Himalayas. The primary aim is to improve the existing condition of Highways in Uttarakhand. The project aims at upgrading and developing the road which connects all four ‘Dhams’ which are Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. The project covers the development of around 900 km of national highways at an allocated budget of 12,000-crore. The dream project will turn 1100 km damaged highways of Uttarakhand into all-season roads.

 

     10. Sewri-Nhava-Sheva sea bridge project also known as Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link will be India’s longest freeway grade road sea bridge. Its length would be approximately 22.5 km, which will connect Mumbai with Navi Mumbai. Eastern Suburbs will connect Mumbai mainland across the harbour through a 16.5 km sea bridge and a viaduct. The bridge will begin in Sewri, South Mumbai and cross Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island and will terminate at Chirle village, near Nhava Sheva. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs18000 crore and is expected to be complete by 2019. Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link will also help increase connectivity to the proposed Navi Mumbai international airport
